GEO: AI search visibility is the new SEO
AI answer engines are becoming the front door to buying decisions — and most websites are invisible to them. What Generative Engine Optimisation is, why it matters now, and how to check where you stand.

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Mode to recommend an agency, a product, or a supplier, and it answers with a shortlist. Not ten blue links — a direct recommendation, with maybe two or three sources cited underneath.
If your business isn't in that answer, you don't rank lower. You don't exist.
That's the shift Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) responds to. SEO optimised for a ranked list a human would scan. GEO optimises for a synthesised answer a machine writes — and the rules for getting cited are different from the rules for ranking.
Why most sites are invisible to AI engines
Here's the uncomfortable part we see in nearly every audit we run: the problem usually isn't content quality. It's that the AI fetcher never sees the content at all.
Modern websites lean heavily on JavaScript. A human's browser executes it and renders the page. Many AI crawlers and answer-engine fetchers don't — they grab the raw HTML and move on. If your site is a client-rendered app, what the fetcher receives is often an empty shell: meta tags, a loading spinner, and none of your actual copy.
We've tested this on real business sites, including our own previous site. The fetcher's view was essentially blank. Every service description, every case study, every proof point — invisible to the systems that now front a growing share of buying research.
What answer engines actually reward
Once your content is technically reachable, citation is a competition. From running audits and rebuilding sites to pass them, the pattern is consistent:
1. Server-rendered, static content. The copy must exist in the HTML itself, not arrive later via JavaScript. This is the pass/fail gate everything else depends on.
2. Structured data. Schema.org markup — Organization, FAQPage, Article, Service — gives engines a machine-readable map of what you are and what you offer. Engines trust structure more than prose.
3. Answer-shaped content. Answer engines lift passages that already look like answers: a clear question, a direct response, specifics over adjectives. A FAQ section written honestly outperforms a page of marketing copy.
4. Verifiable specifics. "We build AI automation" is uncitable. "A replenishment email trigger timed by purchase history, built in Klaviyo for an e-commerce brand" is the kind of concrete claim engines quote.
5. Consistency across the graph. Your site, your LinkedIn, your directory listings — engines cross-reference. Contradictions cost trust; alignment compounds it.
How to check where you stand
The five-minute version: fetch your own homepage the way a crawler does — curl it, or use any "view raw HTML" tool — and search for a sentence you know is on the page. If it's not in the response, AI engines can't read your site. Full stop.

The reason to act now is the reason early SEO adopters won a decade of cheap traffic: the field is still mostly empty. Most businesses haven't heard of GEO. Most agencies aren't checking fetcher-view rendering. Being genuinely citable while competitors are invisible is a compounding advantage — engines that cite you today are more likely to cite you tomorrow.
